Done Built A bridge them Progress People
Many years ago and long before the I 110 bridge was built there was a spot of of beach along the Back Bay where Chester and I were Pirates, Ship Captains, Conquistadors and Explorers of the worlds most darkest continental empires. We were kids dancing with dreams and riding the wild horses of fantasy and at times totally oblivious to the fact we could get hurt doing some of the crazy crap we were doing. Hell, if we had a seine, a loaf of French Bread and a can of Vienna Sausages, we could get to the Moon and back a dozen times. We were kids being kids.
As we drove down the oyster shell drive past the fig tree on the left and the cinder block retaining wall on the right were Chester and I shot many a Kimono Dragon Lizard with our BB guns, we left the Coast on our way to back to Oregon. I was sad for this summers adventure to be over and was looking forward to seeing Chester the following summer to continue where we left off.
At the end of the drive we turned right onto Hopkins and I looked back to see Maw Maw and Nana crying, Aunt Mertile and Granny were elbow deep in a Watermelon and I was popping the top off a can of Vienna’s, comfort food in those days.
I never got the chance to continue the Adventures of Chester and I, he was hurt pretty bad in a boating accident shortly after I left the Coast and 40 years later I still have not been in contact with him. Those days are gone but never far from thought and years later I wrote a snippet, a poem, a reflection of time gone by, what ever you want to call it. I use it as vehicle that transports me back in time to a place that molded and fordged me into who I am today, a place, I pray, that will mold my children tomorrow. As I pop a top off a can of Vienna’s I will leave you with this snippet, I hope you enjoy it.
Done built a bridge them progress people
On top my tree
But still I smell above the tar sizzling Mullet over an open fire
Done chopped my tree them progress people
To build a bridge
But still I hear above the horns
Children tagging on the printed beach
Done built a bridge them progress people
On top my tree
But I climbed it today in memory
I looked down through her branches
At her shadow kissing the water
Done built a bridge them progress people
But still she grows
Still she grows
Still she grows
