Getting up a 4:00 am to be at the school for a departure at 5:00 was an adventure on its own since I was unable to find a sound sleep the night before. With a backpack loaded with P.B.J.’s and various snacks we left Ocean Springs.

About an hour into the trip we were reminded why we live on the Gulf Coast. From our lofty perch we were able to watch a glorious sunrise, undaunted from the constant barrage of questions and insights from my eleven year old bundle of never ending energy. As a renewable energy source, if we could bottle it, we could solve the world’s energy crisis. Hand in hand, me and my little girl.

Walking on the tarmac at the Pensacola Naval Air Station brought back some memories of my own stint in the Navy at a VT Squadron in Corpus Christi, TX. Wow, to remember back when and be here now, with my daughter and the smell of Jet fuel what a journey. I wonder what lies ahead of her and her siblings, what horizons they will witness, what adventures they will take and what goals they will achieve. As a father I question myself, could I have done better? I suppose all parents ask the same question of themselves at one time or another.

Our bridges are back and traffic is once again flowing along the Coast. This tidal surge of traffic with its ebb and flow seems different now than before Katrina. In my mind’s eye I want to remember a more patient and leisurely approach to get from Ocean Springs to Bay St Louis and back, but I would have to go back to a time before Casino’s.

A time filled with The Sun and Sand, Buena Vista sunsets and the Broadwater Hotel. A time when Biloxi, a sleepy little fishing village, where you could witness the Sea and Sirloin walking hand and hand along the beach on their way to the Amusement Park. A time when you knew the doughnuts were fresh, just out of the oven, the strobe light blinking overhead.

A time when Closer to the Edge was not just a record album but also a hot little Night Club filled with twenty-five cent Pong machines and pool tables. A time when the vapors were not the stench from seafood factories or the piles oyster shells baking in the sun, but a mind set you got to, while dancing your nights away at a club with the same name.

I am glad our bridges are back and I am, to some degree, in line with the Butch Brown way of moving traffic. http://www.davidlynnblair.com

While I am a Republican….or was…when there was a Republican party…..there is one item that Senator Obama is pushing that I agree with. It is time for a change. But the way we will get that change is not by electing a new president. It is by making all government officials wake up and realize we have had enough!!!

My theory on how to do this: in November, vote for any new candidate, regardless of their party affiliation. Trust me, when we get rid of half of the existing US Representatives and Senators, the other half will sit up and take note. Course, in four more years, we can get rid of them too!!

I am tired of paying taxes to watch the constant waste of our dollars. You read daily about the 10 million here, the 40 million there and what do we have to show for this money? More millions being spent to fix the errors made while the original monies were being spent.

No, a President alone can’t fix the problems….and the existing Congress won’t….. yes, it is time for America to stand up for America and vote for a change.

I can’t help to think, what is the true cost of our progress? I’m not talking about the almighty dollar, but the cost of our lost patience as a society. I ask you, are we not unleashing another storm? One of discourteous, self absorbed, cell phone talking, impatient, I was here first, and not in front of me you don’t attitudes. A storm if you will, of red light runners, yellow light speed uppers, Left lane slow downers, the XXX rated music of the thump thumpers and the drivers who are totally oblivious to the world out side the scope of their immediate frontal vision. Middle fingers have risen in some sort of Coastal defiance that has taken the term “Birding” to a new and unsightly level.

I will admit that at one time or another I have been guilty of one of the before mentioned acts of impatience. I would also venture to so say, that we all have had those moments when you get so caught up in our own here and now and in the blink of an eye, slip into a character, we might not be proud of later. It’s okay though, its life and stuff happens; we are just humans being humans. So the next time you’re stuck in traffic with your patience at a point of being as thin as a Mickey D’s burger, stop and remember the traffic the first couple of months after “Katrina” and you will realize its not so bad. “Katrina” gave us all a wealth of patience to draw from.

After several months of directional changes, site stalls, and more, the Mississippi Coast informational Blog is finally online and putting out some good, useful information pertaining to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The new direction was taken after several months of trying to utilize a content management system (CMS) that was seemingly too much for users to handle. While the CMS has numerous features and abilities, it seemed to overwelm users, and therefore they left the page without being able to get any real information. The Mississippi Coast blog now includes several features including:

WordPress blogging platform with semi-custom theme

Gravatar avatars for user comments and posts

Popularity rankings of posts based on activity

Relevant post categories and random posts

Featured Posts for important information and time-sensitive information

Public Interest and Real Estate specific posting categories

Much More

The blog platform should be a real winner for success and will eventually become a premier portal for information on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Residents will eventually be able to go on to the site, get information on the Coast, as well as push through to other relevant sites including news, tourism, and more.

I have been watching the news and reading the Sun Herald, diligently searching for some common ground to stand on with the Politicians and whoever else, wants to pump 50 million gallons of water each day from the Pascagoula River to clean out a salt dome for the strategic storage of oil, then pump the salt laden sludge into the Mississippi Sound just off Horn Island.I have been unable to locate any justifiable argument for such a travesty. To think that any Government Agency, Politician, Individual or Corporation would even consider this is nothing less than a blatant misuse of the term, “common sense.” According to recent documentary by P. B. S. the Pascagoula River is one of the most pristine Ecosystems in the United States. It is also the last unimpeded Waterway that many rare and endangered species of plant and animal life reside in. (more…)

If you are in the market to buy or sell a home, you have undoubtedly heard about the "Real Estate Slump" affecting the entire nation and wondered how it may affect you in your purchase or sell.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Housing Market is a little different from the rest of the country. While the subprime market fallout has affected us, our market is still affected more by the Hurricane and the insurance costs afterwards. Another big problem with our market is general public perception.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Housing Market is still moving pretty strong with investors and deals are out there. The supply far outweighs the demand currently and the insurance prices push buyers into homes that are below what they could have afforded if the rates were not so high.

As a seller, this means that you will need to make sure your house is priced competitively if you want to appeal to buyers. Since the supply outweighs the demand, you may have to take less than what you would have a year ago. Some homes that were bought right after Hurricane Katrina have actually depreciated in value because of the high demand then versus the low demand now.

If you are buying a house anywhere in the Mississippi Gulf Coast area, you can expect to get a good deal. Homes are sitting on the market longer than ever and many agents are still trying to get post-Katrina prices for their listings meaning the homes are stagnating at higher prices. By looking at homes that have been listed for some time, you can reasonably expect that the sellers are willing to look at offers. This could potentially save you thousands of dollars on your new home purchase.

At SimplySOLD? Viking Realty, we have buyer’s agents standing by that specialize in negotiating lower sales prices for you. Our buyer’s agents can show you any listed home on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and we look forward to serving you in your purchase.
